Beko: Tackling Scope 3 Challenges & Targeting Net-Zero

Beko, a prominent global home appliances manufacturer, has reached a significant milestone in its sustainability journey.
It has secured validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its ambitious near-term and long-term net-zero targets. The targets align with the global effort to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.
Beko operates in 58 countries, employs 55,000 people and maintains 46 production facilities globally. With a diverse portfolio of 22 brands, including Arçelik, Grundig, Hotpoint and Indesit, Beko is the largest white goods company in Europe by market share.
Its commitment to innovation is evident through its 31 R&D and design centres and more than 3,500 registered patent applications. Moreover, for the fifth consecutive year, Beko earned the highest score in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the Household Durables industry.
Emissions accountability: Addressing Scope 3 challenges
Beko’s sustainability strategy centres on its largest emissions source: Scope 3, which accounts for 99% of the company’s total emissions.
Of this, 82% is linked to the use of sold products. To tackle this, Beko focuses on delivering resource-efficient, energy-smart appliances that reduce emissions throughout their lifecycle.
“Every industry has a responsibility to meet critical global emissions targets designed to ensure the sustainable future of our planet," comments Hakan Bulgurlu, CEO of Beko.
“Achieving net-zero targets requires addressing emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and particularly Scope 3. Energy-efficient products must remain a key focus to ensure sustainability at every level of the value chain.”
Near and long-term goals
With its SBTi-approved targets, Beko commits to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050. These include:
- Near-term goals (by 2030):
- Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% from a 2022 baseline.
- Cut Scope 3 emissions from product use by 42%.
- Long-term goals (by 2050):
- Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90%.
- Achieve a 90% reduction in Scope 3 emissions.
The goals highlight Beko's commitment to embedding sustainability into its business model while driving industry-wide change.
“These goals cannot be met in isolation. Our industry and the entire business world must collaborate with governments, scientists, academics and the value chain to make these ambitious but critical targets a reality.”
Innovating for a greener future
Beko has long prioritised environmental sustainability, leveraging innovations to enhance its manufacturing processes, packaging and product design.
The efforts extend to material sourcing and the end-of-life management of its products, ensuring sustainability at every stage of the value chain.
SBTi's validation not only reflects Beko's environmental leadership but highlights the broader impact of science-based targets in combating climate change. Between 2015 and 2020, SBTi-approved companies collectively reduced emissions by 29%, proving that such commitments drive measurable progress.
As Beko advances towards its 2050 net zero target, its efforts set a powerful precedent for the home appliance sector, demonstrating that sustainable innovation and global collaboration can lead to a greener, more resilient future.
