Mowilex secures its sixth CarbonNeutral certification, showcasing leadership in cutting Scope 3 emissions and driving sustainability across its value chain

PT Mowilex Indonesia (Mowilex) has achieved a notable milestone in its sustainability journey by earning its sixth consecutive CarbonNeutral certification from Climate Impact Partners.

The achievement highlights the company’s steadfast commitment to addressing Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions across its value chain.

As Indonesia’s first certified carbon-neutral manufacturer since 2019, Mowilex has consistently raised the bar in minimising its environmental footprint.

Niko Safavi, CEO at Mowilex

Niko Safavi, CEO at Mowilex commented:

“Mowilex is honoured to receive a sixth consecutive CarbonNeutral company certification. We hold ourselves to high ethical and environmental standards and this recognition proves that manufacturers can make a positive, lasting impact across the value chain.”

Reducing Scope 3 emissions in supply chain and distribution

Central to Mowilex’s sustainability strategy is a comprehensive approach to addressing Scope 3 emissions, particularly in its production and distribution networks. In 2024, the company reported a 98% reduction in emissions from stationary sources, achieved by transitioning from fuel-based equipment to electric alternatives powered by renewable energy.

Embracing renewable energy

Mowilex has further reinforced its sustainability efforts by installing solar panels at its Cikande plant, significantly reducing reliance on non-renewable electricity. It has partnered with ACT Commodities, a CDP gold-accredited organisation, to obtain Renewable Energy Certificates, offsetting its energy consumption and aligning with its carbon-neutral goals.

Supporting global offset projects

In aligning with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Mowilex continues to back offset projects that promote clean energy and community development. Its latest initiative supports India’s Lingasugur Wind Power Project, contributing to renewable energy generation while fostering economic growth.

Recycled Paints

Mowilex’s product innovation aligns with its broader sustainability vision. Introducing Mowilex Recycled paints, containing up to 40% premium recycled paint per 2.5-litre pail, is a significant step towards a circular economy. The initiative directly addresses Scope 3 emissions by promoting resource efficiency and waste reduction.

Community and environmental investments

Beyond its corporate operations, Mowilex invests heavily in community and environmental initiatives. Highlighting these efforts, Niko stated:

“Global change starts with local efforts and Mowilex invests heavily in initiatives that benefit local communities."

"Reducing carbon emissions is just the start. We’ve also supported community development projects, funded habitat restoration and completed planting 50,000 mangrove trees in celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary.”

Contributing to Indonesia’s climate goals

Mowilex’s achievements align with Indonesia’s ambitious environmental targets, including a 31.89% reduction in emissions by 2030 and net zero by 2060.

With the industrial sector accounting for 75% of Indonesia’s emissions in 2019, Mowilex’s leadership sets a critical precedent for sustainable practices in the region.

Transparency and innovation

Its annual Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reports show its commitment to transparency. Additionally, establishing the Mowilex Scientific Advisory Board highlights its focus on expanding research and fostering innovation.

Mowilex’s multifaceted approach to reducing Scope 3 emissions—including supply chain improvements, renewable energy adoption, innovative product development and community engagement—demonstrates how manufacturers can lead in sustainability.

As the company continues to set new standards, it exemplifies businesses' role in creating a more sustainable future.
