Blastr & Lhoist Partner to Slash Scope 3 Emissions in Steel

Blastr Green Steel (Blastr) has partnered strategically with Lhoist, a global leader in lime, dolime, and mineral solutions, to develop a decarbonised supply chain for ultra-low CO₂ steel production in Europe.
The collaboration focuses on supplying Blastr’s future steel plant in Inkoo, Finland, with Lhoist’s LEVEL|GREEN low-carbon lime and dolime, a move that could reduce Scope 3 emissions by up to 50 kg of CO₂ per tonne of steel.
Driving decarbonisation in steel production
Blastr’s upcoming steel plant in Inkoo aims to produce 2.5 million tonnes of ultra-low CO₂ steel annually.
A critical component in steelmaking, lime and dolime are integral to the process. By exploring the use of Lhoist’s LEVEL|GREEN products, Blastr hopes to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and enhance the sustainability of its operations.
Mikael Lindvall, Chief Technology Officer at Blastr, highlighted the impact of this collaboration: “Using LEVEL|GREEN low-carbon lime and dolime could lower our Scope 3 emissions by 50 kg CO₂ per tonne of steel.
"It is crucial in our mission to produce steel with as low as 300 kg of CO₂ per tonne, representing a 90% reduction in emissions across the value chain.”
Lhoist’s move to green solutions
Lhoist’s move to support green initiatives in the Nordic region has been at the forefront of reducing the lime industry’s carbon through the large-scale adoption of low-carbon fuels and investments in carbon capture technologies.
Mathias Michiels, Commercial Manager Nordic at Lhoist, stated: “We are proud that Blastr recognises Lhoist as the right partner for its project.
"Our LEVEL|GREEN footprint lime and dolime products, by design, grow the market demand for low-carbon solutions and we’re eager to support Blastr in their journey to decarbonise steel production.”
Technical collaboration and supply chain security
The partnership will explore the technical integration of low-carbon lime and dolime into Blastr’s steelmaking process and consider establishing a terminal for handling the supply of these materials to the Inkoo plant.
Lhoist’s extensive network of European plants offers supply chain security, a critical factor in ensuring consistent, high-quality production for Blastr’s end customers.
Antti Kaikkonen, Country Manager at Blastr Finland, emphasised the importance of this collaboration: “Securing a reliable supply of high-quality lime and dolime is essential for producing top-grade strip steel products.
"Lhoist’s vast European network and technical expertise provide us with the optimal solutions to achieve our goals.”
Next steps towards low-carbon steel
As part of this partnership, both companies will focus on technical support and logistics planning while assessing regulatory requirements. The partners are targeting a formal supply agreement, subject to Blastr’s final investment decision for the steel plant.
The agreement marks a significant step in Blastr’s broader strategy to lead ultra-low CO₂ steel production. By partnering with Lhoist, Blastr strengthens its supply chain and will align with its sustainability goals, setting a new standard for the European steel industry.
The collaboration highlights the importance of innovative partnerships in driving the decarbonisation of traditional industries, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
