Alfa Laval targets growth while tackling Scope 3 emissions
Alfa Laval is accelerating net-zero goals, focusing on Scope 1, 2 and value chain-wide Scope 3 emissions to balance sustainability with ambitious growth

Alfa Laval is making strides in its journey toward net-zero emissions, with a strong emphasis on Scope 1 and 2.

However, as the Swedish firm accelerates its climate ambitions, the focus on Scope 3 emissions—those generated across its value chain—becomes increasingly vital.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions: A promising start

Alfa Laval has demonstrated commendable progress in reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which are directly tied to its operations.

Accelerating these reductions signals the company’s commitment to achieving net zero in its own facilities and energy use.

Emma Adlerton, a spokesperson for Alfa Laval,

Emma Adlerton, Chief Legal Officer at Alfa Laval, reinforces the commitment: "We are determined to lead the way and be a frontrunner in showing what is possible going towards net zero."

While the accelerated timeline is a significant step, it is only part of the equation for comprehensive climate action.

The growing importance of Scope 3 emissions

Alfa Laval’s ambitious growth strategy, which targets 100 BSEK (US$9bn) in annual sales by 2030, is likely to increase Scope 3 emissions as production and supply chain activities expand.

Scope 3 emissions, which include those from suppliers, logistics and the use of sold products, form a significant portion of the company’s overall carbon footprint.

Tom Erixon, CEO of Alfa Laval

Tom Erixon, CEO at Alfa Laval, acknowledges the dual challenge of growth and sustainability, stating: "The growing demand emerging from the global energy transition will continue to drive our growth towards 2030."

This reflects the company’s vision to balance growth with its commitment to sustainable solutions, leveraging its expertise in energy transition and sustainable industries to help reduce emissions within its value chain.

Innovative solutions for sustainable industries

A key aspect of Alfa Laval’s approach to mitigating Scope 3 emissions lies in developing innovative solutions that support sustainability.

It focuses on sectors like clean energy, water purification, food production and decarbonised marine transportation offers opportunities to reduce emissions not only in its own operations, but for customers and suppliers.

Alfa Laval’s product offerings, such as heat exchangers and decarbonisation technologies, are designed to enable more efficient energy use and lower emissions in various industries.

By supporting its customers’ efforts to decarbonise, Alfa Laval contributes to indirect emissions reductions—a critical component of its Scope 3 strategy.

Challenges and opportunities

Despite its progress, Alfa Laval faces challenges in aligning its Scope 3 goals with its accelerated sustainability timeline. While the original target of a 50% reduction in Scope 3 emissions remains unchanged, the company acknowledges the complexity of addressing these emissions comprehensively.

Alfa Laval’s growth presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Expanded production could increase emissions, but investments in emerging technologies and sustainable solutions could offset this impact.

By fostering collaboration across its value chain and driving innovation, Alfa Laval has the potential to create a ripple effect of emissions reductions.

Leading the way to comprehensive sustainability

As Alfa Laval accelerates its journey to net zero, the company’s success will depend on its ability to address emissions across all scopes. Its commitment to sustainable growth, coupled with its dedication to innovation, positions Alfa Laval as a leader in the global energy transition.

"We are determined to lead the way and be a frontrunner in showing what is possible going towards net zero."

Emma Adlerton, a spokesperson for Alfa Laval

For Alfa Laval, achieving net zero is not just about meeting targets—it’s about reshaping industries, driving innovation and making a lasting impact on global sustainability.
